Fixed mobile convergence is coming, but there are still a wide array of options that range from a simple simultaneous ring feature to solutions that extend presence-enabled directories and visual voicemail to mobile devices worldwide. The cellular carriers are also hinting at plans to introduce their own FMC services based on either Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) or the more comprehensive IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Meanwhile, IP-PBX vendors, technology partners and now WLAN switch vendors are all proposing their own solutions. This session will provide an overview of FMC and mobile unified communications and a description of the various strategies now being proposed.

Mobile UC mobilizes voice and messaging (deskphone, contacts, IM and presence) by unifying these UC applications onto smartphones. The Mobile UC solution can run on either WiFi or cellular networks, or both, making users more reachable, and thus more productive.

Yet these communication tools can only offer maximum productivity for business users when the caller, or message-sender, knows that the party they are trying to reach is truly available for communication, and by what method. Presence addresses the availability issue, and is one of the staple UC capabilities provided by a truly mobile UC solution. Presence has become a key driver in both the perceived and actual value of UC. This session will discuss how Presence lets mobile workers be more available and more productive.
